Inductive Extension of Abduction

چکیده

This observation comes from the fact that in standard ALP [ Kakas, et al., 1992 ] , hypotheses are restricted to atoms which are pre-speci ed as abducibles. However, distinction on the sentential form of hypotheses is not necessarily the point. In fact, the ALP framework is easily extended to include abducible rules [ Inoue and Sakama, 1994 ] . Namely, a set of hypothetical clauses are speci ed in advance, which are used in the process of abduction. Technically, such an extension is realized in the framework of standard ALP. Given a knowledge base K, if one wants to consider a hypothetical clause

An Abductive-Inductive Algorithm for Probabilistic Inductive Logic Programming

The integration of abduction and induction has lead to a variety of non-monotonic ILP systems. XHAIL is one of these systems, in which abduction is used to compute hypotheses that subsume Kernel Sets. On the other hand, Peircebayes is a recently proposed logic-based probabilistic programming approach that combines abduction with parameter learning to learn distributions of most likely explanati...

Conjunctive Versus Disjunctive Abduction —A Pragmatic Difference Between Abduction and Inverse Resolution

The philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce (see [1] for further details) distinguished three types of logical inference: deduction, induction and abduction. Deduction is a form of explicative inference; the conclusion follows necessarily from the premises. Induction and abduction, however, are forms of ampliative inference, the results of which do not follow necessarily from the premises. Harman [2...

Learning with Abduction

We investigate how abduction and induction can be integrated into a common learning framework through the notion of Abductive Concept Learning (ACL). ACL is an extension of Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) to the case in which both the background and the target theory are abductive logic programs and where an abductive notion of entailment is used as the coverage relation. In this framework, i...

The Relation between Abductive Hypotheses and Inductive Hypotheses

In the AI eld, abduction is used for design, diagnosis and other tasks. This is because abduction is a sort of predictive inference. On the other hand, induction is used for classiication. For example, ILP nds greater tendencies in examples and learns general rules from the examples and background knowledge. Recently, the integration of abduction and induction has become a hot issue. In this pa...

On the Relation between Abduction and Inductive Learning

This Handbook volume is devoted to abduction and learning as they appear in various subfields of artificial intelligence. Broadly speaking, abduction aims at finding explanations for, or causes of, observed phenomena or facts. Learning occurs when an agent adapts its state or behaviour on the basis of experience. Both processes have a number of common characteristics. They both aim at improving...
